Bio
Can is the OpenStreetMap Trainer for the Asia-Pacific Regional Hub. Based in Turkey, he got his B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, and his Ph.D. in Geomatics from Istanbul Technical University, specializing in GIS-based applications in disaster management and seismic loss assessment. He also spent time at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) as a visiting researcher at the Mid-America Earthquake Center during 2008 and 2009.
He was first introduced to OpenStreetMap in 2012 as a side interest along with his main studies. All things OSM have become a priority and a driving force for him since.
He has worked as an assistant professor in various civil engineering departments within Turkey since 2013, incorporating open geospatial tools and OpenStreetMap into courses such as Surveying, GIS, and Introduction to Geomatics.
Having a moth-flame relationship with humanitarian open mapping, he formerly managed two field projects conducted by HOT between 2018 and 2021. He is looking forward to carry his training, assessment, and curriculum design experience from academia to reinforce and improve HOT’s training strategies.
