Ishan Shrestha
Junior Backend Engineer / Nepal
Ishan Shrestha is a Junior Backend Engineer on HOT’s Tech & Data team, based in
Kathmandu, Nepal. He works on the Field Tasking Manager and looks after HOT’s OSM and HDX data export pipelines. He also supports OpenAerialMap and Drone Tasking Manager, and helps make HOT’s tools easier to monitor and debug.
Before joining HOT, Ishan spent over three years at Naxa building geospatial backends for
humanitarian and government partners across Nepal. He led backend development of
Integrated Dastaa, a multi-sector disaster risk assessment platform, including survey ingestion pipelines for KoboToolbox and ODK data, risk assessment engines, and GIS map APIs. He also built PostGIS-powered APIs and map tile services for health accessibility mapping, and the search backend for a heatwave and coldwave early-warning dashboard.
Ishan works mainly with Python (Django, FastAPI, Litestar), Go, and PostgreSQL/PostGIS,
MongoDB and cares about building reliable, well-documented systems that field teams and communities can depend on.
Outside of work, Ishan loves tinkering with Linux, customizing his desktop setup (he’s a big fan of tiling window managers), and experimenting with new tools and tech. He also enjoys playing video games, badminton, and cricket.
