About HOT

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is a US-based NGO and global community of thousands of volunteers working together to use maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. As the world’s preeminent participatory mapping NGO, HOT has fostered a global mapping community composed of more than 175,000 people with ground operations in eight countries. When major disaster strikes anywhere in the world, HOT rallies this global network to create the maps and data that enable responders to reach those in need.

Background

HOT launched the PhilAWARE disaster management project in 2019. Working with the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) the project aims to support disaster risk reduction and best practices throughout all phases of disaster management in the Philippines by providing early warning, multi-hazard monitoring, modeled impact assessments, and the world’s largest collection of scientifically verified geospatial data in a highly visual and easy-to-use web application. The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Office of the Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).

To assist in outreach and communications, HOT seeks to hire a Communications Associate for this program.

Profile

The Communications Associate will be responsible for coordinating outreach for PhilAWARE and other relevant HOT projects in the Philippines. This entails:

  • Supporting HOT to raise our press and digital media presence by writing press releases and social media activities, including on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and other platforms.

  • Organizing conference outreach through booths and presentations for the PhilAWARE team.

  • Leading the development of case studies and white papers regarding OSM in the Philippines.

  • Creating print and marketing materials.

  • Coordinating communications in support of HOT and PhilAWARE and possible outreach outside of the Philippines.

  • Working with the HOT team to create marketing and how-to videos.

Practicalities

This position is based in Quezon City, Philippines, with the primary place of work being at the HOT workspace in Manila, with possibility of remote work 2 days a week. Depending on the grant requirements, there might be some travel within and outside the Philippines. Depending on project funding, there is a possibility of extension.

Eligibility Criteria

  • At least two years of professional experience with communications and marketing in the Philippines.

  • Skilled in technical writing and able to assist with monthly project reporting.

  • Ability to manage and execute a communications strategy

  • Experience managing and growing multiple social media accounts

  • Previous experience in mass media outreach, such as writing press releases

  • Experience in photography, video shooting and editing

  • Experience in graphic design, such as publications layout and infographics (preferably with open source tools).

  • Able to manage community meetups and other forms of engagement.

  • Experience / substantive knowledge in disaster response, open data or open source is strongly desired.

  • Able to speak and write professionally in Tagalog and in English.
