Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is a US-based NGO and global community of thousands of volunteers working together to use maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. As the world’s preeminent participatory mapping NGO, HOT has fostered a global mapping community composed of more than 130,000 people with ground operations in eight countries. During crisis, HOT rallies this global network to create the maps and data that enable responders to reach those in need.

About the position

The Data Quality Intern will review the quality of data, carry out mapping and validation, as well as provide feedback to mappers on HOT remote mapping projects including activations. This will involve learning and using new and existing OSM Quality Assurance tools to improve the quality of data in OpenStreetMap.

Data Quality Intern Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend mapping and validation training
  • Contribute to remote mapping tasks using the HOT Tasking Manager
  • Validate on remote mapping tasks
  • Participate in the community working meetings
  • Reporting work progress and a final report after the internship period.

Requirements

  • Passionate to use digital tools for development/humanitarian relief and improving the lives of others
  • Passionate about practical humanitarian volunteering and crowdsourcing
  • Completed or in progress of Bachelor’s degree
  • Attention to detail and ability to ensure high-quality OpenStreetMap data
  • Kind and supportive of mappers, ability to explain issues and how to resolve them
  • Access to a computer with a reliable internet connect
