Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is a US-based NGO and global community of thousands of volunteers working together to use maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. As the world’s preeminent participatory mapping NGO, HOT has fostered a global mapping community composed of more than 50,000 people with ground operations in five countries. When major disaster strikes anywhere in the world, HOT rallies this global network to create the maps and data that enable responders to reach those in need.

HOT is a global leader in open mapping learning and training. HOT publishes and maintains the LearnOSM.org website, and has provided classroom training in open mapping and open source GIS to more than 3000 people since 2011. Through this extensive experience, HOT has developed curriculum that is adaptable to a variety of contexts, needs, and partners and has demonstrated experience in integrating HOT’s open mapping tools and approach into existing systems and methods. However, the majority of this material has been available only in English and Bahasa Indonesian. To expand the audience and accessibility of this training material, HOT is soliciting CVs of applicants for translation training materials and documentation into French.

About the Position

The Training Materials & Documentation Translator (French) will work with the HOT Programs Associate to translate all materials available on HOT’s Toolbox, a repository of HOT training materials for OSM Communities and Project Managers, into French.

Responsibilities

  • Translate English training materials and documentation materials, including but not limited to online guides, presentations, into French.

  • Ensure translated material conveys original meaning and technical guidance.

  • Work with the HOT staff to ensure English and French versions of the site, and all contained materials, provide the same learning outcomes and experience.

  • Provide quality assurance that translated material meets standards of accuracy, grammar, and spelling.

About You

Essential:

  • Hold a university or college degree; preference for degrees in French, English (if native French speaker), Public Health, Geography, GIS, Disaster Risk Management, Urban Planning, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Technical Fluency in English and French, including terms used in software, cartography and GIS.

  • Experience in translating technical documentation and able to provide work samples

  • Familiarity with GIS and mapping

  • Care deeply about the mission: passionate about humanitarian / development work demonstrated through prior professional or volunteer experiences

  • At least 3 years professional experience

  • Proven ability to work independently

Additional desirable skill sets/experience:

  • Familiarity or experience working with OpenStreetMap tools, such JOSM and iD, QGIS

  • Familiarity or experience working with mobile survey tools including OpenMapKit, OpenDataKit (ODK),

  • Experience in training and curriculum development

  • Sector expertise in disaster risk reduction, public health, or water, sanitation, & hygiene

Conditions

Assignment on contractor basis. Salary determined by HOT pay scales.
