Tropical Cyclone Odette 2021 Response are activities that support the local OSM Philippines Community on the following campaign.


“Typhoon Rai (locally named Odette) further intensified and became of typhoon strength while it continued to move west northwestward. According to the Philippines weather bureau, PAGASA, Typhoon Rai continues to gain strength, currently packing maximum winds of 130 km/h and gustiness of up to 160 km/h and is expected to make landfall in the vicinity of Surigao Provinces or southern portion of Eastern Visayas late on Thursday,16 December with high winds up to 155 km/h.”

The Tropical Cyclone Odette Response are activities to support the OpenStreetMap Philippines Community in their response to Tropical Cyclone Odette (international name: Rai).

Tropical Cyclone Odette response focused on activities to support OSM Philippines and their efforts to generate map data useful to the response and recovery from Typhoon Odette/International Name: Rai.


  • Good response from OSM PH Community when HOT contacted them to initiate the activation.
  • This activation showed the maturity of OSM Community in the context of planning the activation as communication, mapping area and building preferences, mapping and validation process were all led by the community while HOT only supported the coordination and documentation.
  • On the other hand, how the data from the mapping activity used by relevant actors remains a challenge both for OSM PH community and HOT to be prepared in the next activation.
